Sweet and Spicy Harissa Chicken
Monday, July 25, 2022
Look no further, here is another quick recipe to save you on a busy
weekday. It's a one-pot recipe, and another great way to use your Harissa
Spice.
This Sweet and Spicy Harissa Chicken can be served with a crisp salad as I
did, with rice, or with roasted vegetables. You can use chicken fillets
instead, and make wraps, sandwiches or burgers with this recipe.
Harissa is one of those flexible spices that are more commonly found
in paste form that originates from North Africa. It's a roasted hot chilli
pepper paste, that is packed with more spices and it adds a ton of flavour
to your meals and can be used in multiple ways. Such as in multiple
different marinades (Saffron and Harissa Morrocan Fish Recipe), as a potato spice, or even in your breakfast eggs (Shakshuka Recipe).
If you're new to my site, I share the method twice. Once with step-by-step
pictures and right after I share the exact same method for the second time
but without the pictures. I have also started making more cooking videos. If
you'd like to check out me making this Sweet and Spicy Harissa Chicken or

INGREDIENTS
1 Chicken - cut into pieces
2 Tbsp Harissa Spice or Paste
2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
Zest of 1 Lemon
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Pepper
1 tsp Dry Parsley
1 - 2 tsp Chilli Flakes (Adjust Depending On Your Heat Preference)
1 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
1 Tbsp Oil
1 Lemon - Sliced
1 Tbsp Butter
1 1/2 Tbsp Honey
2 - 3 Garlic Cloves - Sliced
1/4 Cup Mayonnaise
1 Tbsp Garlic Sauce
1/2 tsp Harissa Powder or Paste
Freshly Chopped Coriander - garnish
METHOD WITH STEP-BY-STEP PICTURES
1. Marinate the chicken pieces in harissa powder or paste, lemon juice,
lemon zest, salt, pepper, dry parsley, chilli flakes, garlic powder, and
oil. Set aside for at least 1 hour to marinate.
2. Heat the pot for 1-2 minutes over medium-high heat before adding the
marinated chicken. Let the chicken sizzle away and brown on one side for 1
minute before turning the chicken pieces over and browning the other
side.
3. Next, add 1/2 cup of water and, once it starts to bubble, turn down
the heat to medium and let the chicken cook till done, for approximately 35–45 minutes.
4. While the chicken is cooking, make a quick dipping sauce by mixing
together the mayonnaise, garlic sauce, and harissa powder or paste.
5. Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the pot and keep it aside.
There should be a little liquid left in the pot, to which add the butter,
sliced garlic, honey, and lemon slices. Stir it all together, and on
medium heat, let the sauce thicken. Make sure the sauce does not
burn.
6. When the sauce begins to bubble, the lemon and garlic soften and the
sauce becomes glossy, add
back in the chicken, coat the chicken pieces in the glossy thick sauce,
and leave to simmer for just 1-2 minutes.
7. Before serving, garnish with freshly chopped coriander.

DeleteThe chicken looks flavorful. Love the seasoning you use. I do not eat mayonnaise, so I will skip the dipping sauce. Thanks for sharing.
