“Sweet, spicy, and extra cheesy
- basically me in snack form”
There’s just something undeniably satisfying about a good mozzarella
stick - the golden, crispy coating, the viral cheese pull, and that first
bite of gooey, cheesy goodness. Don’t say I didn’t warn you, that these
Nashville Hot Honey Mozzarella Sticks are dangerously addictive.
A month ago, my explore page was practically bursting with mozzarella
stick cheese pulls, and I knew I had to make my own version. That’s how
this fiery, sweet-and-spicy fusion came to life, and honestly, zero
regrets. The crispiness of the coating, the creamy cheese centre, and that
hot honey glaze? An elite combo.
These make the perfect appetiser or side dish, it’s great for grazing
boards, food platters, match-day snacks, as a cheeky treat, or as a
braai/bbq side. You can enjoy them as is, or do what I did and coat them
in a sticky Nashville Hot Honey Sauce (a sauce I was originally saving for
something else… but it was too good not to use here!). I also paired them
with my Homemade Ranch Dressing, which if you haven’t tried it yet, [click
here
for the recipe].
So when I made this, I doubled the recipe because I made extra to freeze
and use on another day, which is why there’s more in the pictures in the
video. However, my recipe below is for one block (300g), so don’t stress
about having to cut the recipe in half.
Now, one block is still A LOT of cheese...can there be such a
thing lol yes! So,
my suggestion would be to cut thinner strips, halve the strips or
cut into 1-inch bite-size cubes
- which is what I’ll be doing the next time I make these.
Whether you’re team deep-fry or air-fry, I’ve shared both options in the
method so you can choose your own cheesy adventure. I also share how to
reheat these up easily, and if you’d like to freeze them for later frying
or air-frying, I share how to do that as well.

Ingredients
1 Block Lancewood Mozzarella (300g)
1 Cup Flour
3 Large Eggs
2 Cups Breadcrumbs
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1 tsp Onion Powder
2 tsp Paprika
1/2 tsp Cayenne Pepper
1/4 tsp Salt (or to taste)
1/4 tsp Black Pepper (or to taste)
Neutral Frying Oil, or You can also air fry
Nashville Hot Honey Sauce:
1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter
1 tbsp Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup Honey
1 tsp Paprika
1 - 2 Tbsp Hot Sauce or Sriracha
Garnish and Serve With:
1/4 tsp Dry Chopped Chives or Parsley - optional
Homemade Ranch Dressing (click

for the recipe)
Method With Pictures
1. Set up your battering station with three bowls. In the first bowl, add the
flour. In the second bowl, add the eggs and beat until smooth. In the third
bowl, mix into the breadcrumbs the garlic powder, onion powder, paprika,
cayenne powder, salt, and pepper.
2. Cut the mozzarella into slices, mine were about 1/2 inch thick (as shown in the
pictures). Shockingly, it was a bit
too
cheesy (I know, blasphemy). My suggestion is to cut them thinner, halve the
strips, or cube them into small, 1-inch bite-sized cubes, which I will do
next time.
3. Dredge each mozzarella stick through the flour.
4. Next, dunk the flour-coated mozzarella stick into the beaten eggs.
5. Finally, dip into the seasoned breadcrumb mixture. Use your fingers to
pat the breadcrumbs into the mozzarella sticks. Repeat the coating again -
double coating, double crispiness.
6. Place each coated mozzarella stick on a plate or baking pan lined with
parchment paper (or coat it with a non-stick spray), and freeze for at least
15 minutes. If you’re prepping to have these on another day, after 15
minutes (once they’re firm), transfer them to an airtight container and keep
in the freezer. Thaw for 10-15 minutes before frying or
air-frying.
7. While the mozzarella sticks are freezing, combine the butter, brown sugar, honey, paprika, and hot sauce or Sriracha
sauce in a saucepan over low heat. Stir until the butter is melted and the sauce
begins to bubble. Keep over low heat and let it simmer for 1-2 minutes (it doesn’t need to
boil for too long); it will thicken slightly and turn glossy, which is when
you know it’s perfect. If it happens to cool down and solidify before
basting the crispy hot mozzarella sticks, just reheat it again.
8. Time to fry, bring a deep and wide pan with 2 inches of neutral frying oil to 175 Degrees
C (oil just needs to be enough to cover the crumbed mozzarella sticks). Fry
until deeply golden brown, about 4 - 5 minutes, if your pot is small, fry in
batches. Another option is to air fry at 190 Degrees C for 6 - 8
minutes.
9. Quickly brush the mozzarella sticks with the Nashville Hot Honey Sauce,
coating all sides, and pour the leftover sauce over the mozzarella
sticks.
10. Garnish with dried, chopped chives or parsley, and enjoy immediately with
homemade ranch dressing (click
here
for the recipe). To keep them warm without losing their crispiness, lightly
tent them with aluminium foil; do not wrap them fully, as this will cause
them to become soggy. Remember, once cooled, the cheese solidifies. To
reheat, place them in a hot oven at 200°C for 4 - 5 minutes, or pop them
back into the air fryer for 2 - 3 minutes.
